When Sex Scenes Go Too Far: Is SA TV Losing the Plot?

We all know that sex sells. But is it becoming too much? South African viewers have raised concerns about how intimacy scenes in local shows and films are starting to cross the line. What used to be family-friendly entertainment now feels uncomfortable to watch with others in the room.

Shows like The Wife, Fatal Seduction, and others are leaning heavily into sexual content, blurring the line between storytelling and shock value. Viewers on TikTok and other platforms have voiced frustration, saying they can’t watch anything anymore without sex or nudity being pushed in their faces.

Now, to be fair, some shows do need sex scenes. When it’s part of the storyline or central to the character development, it makes sense. It adds depth, realism, and emotional weight. But a lot of the time, it’s the opposite. Scenes are dropped in for no clear reason. You’re watching something with great potential, and then out of nowhere comes a sex scene that doesn’t serve the plot. It kills the momentum and leaves viewers wondering, “Was that really necessary?”

So the bigger question is: has this become a trend? A formula? If you can’t beat them, join them? It’s starting to feel like even the shows that don’t need sex scenes are adding them just to stay relevant or compete. And that’s where the concern grows. When intimacy is no longer about the story, but about staying in the game, the quality of storytelling takes a hit.

Sex might sell, but when it’s overused or misplaced, it can weaken the very thing it’s trying to strengthen. For South Africa’s film and TV industry, it’s time to ask: are we telling stories or just chasing views?
